Thanks for your quick reply! Since John and Mary are not my main subject of research, I didn't want to spend a lot of time sorting out all the John Bells if someone else had already done it. I think your findagrave information solves the John and Inger question.
The information about the possible Norwegian name for Susan may help me a lot.
Susan Peterson/Petersen was my friend's gggrandmother. I've documented her life after marriage pretty well, but didn't know anything to help go backward. I had been assuming she came to this country alone as a young woman, which may be the case. I had not considered the possibility that she had a name change. She married Patrick Henry McCarthy about 1875. They first appear as a couple in a N. Dakota census of 1885, but they have children born before 1880. In the 1885 census, her birthplace is listed as Ireland (like Patrick's), but in later censuses it's listed as Norway. I have a Patrick McCarthy the right age in an 1880 census record for Spring Lake, Scott, MN, but it says he's single. So I have more work to do on this couple.
Are you researching the Bells or the Petersons?
Thanks again.
Martha
