Hi Thompson - good point, would be highly unusual for a Kiowa person to live in the locations mentioned in the marriage record, 1850 census, and 1860 census for Mathilde's parents. BTW apparently many descendants claim Hester Ann Smith was Cherokee and no descendant claims this for Charles (no descendant we know of). I have now searched Cherokee-related databases on Ancestry.com one by one. Sometimes you get better results that way than with a global search. Found nothing for Mathilde or her family members so far (I did not search under her adoptive parents' surname). The original poster just wanted to find an old newspaper article; the family has lost their clipping of it. Have you had any luck searching for that? I'm striking out.
Hester could not appear in the US census prior to 1850 because at that time (1830, 1840) only heads of household (i.e. her dad) were enumerated by name.
