Mary, the 1930 census shows Ray Stewart's first marriage was at 27 years. But it also shows Betty Stewart's first marriage at 16!
The 1940 census shows Ray and Betty the same age, 39, and Gwendolyn E McDonough at age 23 and single.
So I'mthinking Gwen was Ray's step-daughter - Betty's daughter from her previous marriage at age 16, more than likely to a McDonough!
Betty and Gwen's ages in 1940 of 39 and 23 are indicative that Betty had Gwen around age 16.
OR Betty married someone else at age 16 and Gwen married a McDonough, and she either was widowed or divorced before 1940 and moved in with Ray and Betty.
Ray Stewart has been one of my most interesting searches!!
Ray first shows up in my family in the 1910 Tennessee census as the 12th child (an 8 year son) of my g-grandparents Alfred Merriel Stewart, Jr. and Rebecca Harper. It was known that my g-grandparents had only 11 children, so I guessed Ray was a grandson.
Ray next shows up in the 1920 Mobile Alabama census as the 18 year old NEPHEW of my great uncle Stephen Stuart (sp) which gave weight to his being the grandson, not son, of Alfred Stewart. I lost track of Ray after that but checked the other Stewart siblings to see if he might have been their son.
