I know this is a long-shot, but I am hoping that someone can help trace the Lane Family from the Ralls/Butler County areas of Missouri. My husband's family (Lane) holds a "secret" that we were unable to get from his grandfather nor his sister--the only remaining Lane's on my husband's side of the family.
We have been told of an Indian/European marriage, fleeing from Michigan or Illinois to Missouri/Arkansas and later Oklahoma (when Indian Territory opened) because of a family feud. A name change or hidden identity may be involved. One version we have heard says the man (possibly "Max" or "Maxum") was an Indian Chief (possibly Cherokee/Iliniwek) and the other says that the "Lane" married an Indian maiden. In any case, we do know that even to this day, there are some parts of the Lane family that are not speaking because of a bitter feud. We do have access to a picture that shows a female who traveled with the French fur traders by the name of "Katie Brown", who married "Richard Thomas Lane" (possibly Thomas Richard) in 1899 in Ralls County, Missouri. We believe this may be a significant part of this puzzle.
The man in this picture has Native American features and is almost identical to pictures of my husband's grandfather, Giles Lane (Howe OK/later, Independence MO) and the father of a friend of ours who has Lane ancestry (his father was Phillip Thaddeus Munson--son of Roma [Lane] Munson). Their family reports say that Richard died around 1938 (possibly in Missouri) and was buried in Morning Sun, Iowa (we believe near the Cahokia Indian Mounds).
My husband's known family history: Giles Clinton Lane was born in 1908 as the son of Clarence Matthew and Oma (Roberts) Lane (her family lived in Kilgore, Arkansas). He had one sister, Pauline (Lane) Hudson of Henryetta OK. Clarence and Oma were married in Butler Co, MO (Fisk) and it is believed that both Giles and Pauline were also born in the area (Poplar Bluff/Fisk, although we cannot track early birth certificates). It is believed that Clarence was one of 12 children, but I cannot find definitive information on his parents.
We are desperately trying to put pieces together regarding any of the people above, as we believe the two families are connected (hopefully on the same side of the family tree). Any help would be much appreciated!
