Thanks so, so much for your response. I have previously found this information. But what happens to Louie Watts Downing next. Plans were being made for Louie Watts Downing to travel to Memphis, Missouri to be cared for by the husbands family. In letters, it seems that the husband, John A. Downing, is very concerned for his wife--that she be taken care of. Could she have been sick or with child? Did she die? Genealogists tell me that during that time period/the Civil War (1863) many young mothers died during child birth along with their baby.
John Downing left the 3rd Regiment and went to California sometime between March-June 1863. Was Louie with him? What happened to Louie Watts Downing??? (Might be Louisa or even Louise and would have been born around 1843.) Thanks for your insights and help. It is much appreciated!!!!
