Hi Sandy:
I'm wondering if William's father might have been a veteran of the War of 1812.This is because of William's birthdate around 1822.My ggg-grandparents were married in 1821 and he (Benjamin Sheldon) was a veteran of the war. This Sheldon family then moved to Ohio from New York in the mid 1840's as did your family to Michigan.I have a hunch that they moved with land grants for veterans of the war and this is an area that I will eventually research further.Just something to keep in the back of your mind.
You might contact the Elsie Historical Society. They can be reached by writing J. Mead; PO Box 187; Elsie, MI 48831 (she's a distant cousin of mine, and volunteer for the Society).Unfortunately they do not have Internet access. My sister and I visited their research room in the library in August, and she has donated a newer computer, but it's still not online.Elsie (where my parents went to high school and met) is a pretty small town, and most of the volunteers are elderly and not computer savy. But, they have a lot of resources and they are very meticulous.
I'm not as experienced in Ionia County as I am in Clinton / Shiawassee / Eaton counties where our family's stomping grounds are located.
Please let me know when you come up with some information!
Sincerely,
Jack Sheldon
