The ANDREWS family that I am researching emmigrated to Detroit in approximately 1844. In the 1850 census, all of the males' (aged 36,35,23,19) occupation is listed as 'machinist'. The males are living in Detroit city, Wayne County, as well as the rural areas of Lenawee County (Morenci township).
Do you have any ideas of what type of occupations this 'machinist' might refer to?
I'm wondering if it is just the census enumerator's term for 'general laborer of no particular skill'???I have, however, seen the occupation of 'laborer' also listed on the census.
