Woman Faints In Court Mrs. Collins Dragged Before Judge to Plead
Yesterday morning in Municipal Court, Mrs. Kate Van Winkle Collins was literally dragged before Judge Bennett to answer to the charge of murdering her husband, Dr. Roy A. Miles Collins, July 24, last. The woman prisoner’s hair was loose and disheveled. Her eyes were wild, though dry and staring. She held back, but was forced into the courtroom, supported by two officers.
District Attorney Cameron read the charge.Russell E. Sewall, her attorney, answered for Mrs. Collins, pleading not guilty and waiving preliminary examination.Mrs. Collins was formally bound over to the grand jury by Judge Bennett, and in a swooning condition was carried from the room by Court Bailiff Circle.
The proceedings were watched breathlessly by over a hundred spectators, who were drawn to the court-room by the Ruffner-Devlin trial, in progress at the time. Not a few low-voiced cries of “shame,” “shame,” were heard. Mrs. Collins was later sent to the County Jail. Her condition does not appear to be any better than it was the morning of the shooting. The consensus of opinion about police headquarters was that she is still insane.Mrs. Collins’ condition became such last evening that she was again taken to Mountain View Sanitarium.
