My maternal great grandparents, Morten/Martin and Kirsten/Christine Hansen,(along with two of their children, Harold, age 3, and Andreas, age 1 3/4)immigrated from Gedesby (Falster), Maribo, DK to Fremont, NE 9/15/1882, on the Thingvalla. The 1885 City of Fremont census shows them all still living in Fremont.
The First Evangelical Lutheran Church records for Creston, NE mention Christine and Andrew between 1895 and 1898. And it appears that Christine is now married to her second husband, Soren Rasmussen. Martin has disappeared! I have searched all available records and cannot find him after 1885.
Two questions: 1) If I send to Lincoln for Martin's death record, and Christine's 2nd marriage record is that futile and a waste of my $$? [Records weren't recorded with the state until 1906.]Would those records perhaps be at the county level? 2) Why would this family immigrate to Fremont?
Just one more note: Karen Hansen (older child of Martin and Christine) immigrated in 1883 at age 14-15. Her obituary says she married her husband, Rasmus Sorensen, in Fremont in 1888. They lived in Clarkson until 1893 when they moved to Council Creek Twp. in Nance County. [These are my maternal grandparents.]
