Martin J. Tilson was born in Sweden, June 15, 1830. At an early age he was confirmed in the Swedish Lutheran Church. He was United in marriage June, 1855, to Christine Olesen [sic]. They came to America in June, 1868, and settled in Warren Co., Ill. They moved to Gosper Co. Nebr. in September 1900. The wife preceded him, having passed away June 20, 1905. He started on the long journey to the better land Sept. 25, 1914. He leaves to mourn his loss four daughters and two sons, all of whom were born in Sweden except the youngest, John. They are Mrs. Celia Benson, Elwood, Nebr; Mrs. Nellie Jacobs, Monmouth, Ill; S. M. Tilson, Elwood, Neb; Mrs. Hannah Sinton, Keokuk, IA; Mrs. Tillie Jacobson, Princeton, Wis; John Tilson, Elwood, Nebr.
About twenty years ago he became more actively engaged in Christian work. The last few years of his life were largely occupied in prayer and singing religious songs. During all his sickness, he was a very patient sufferer to the end.
The funeral services were conducted in the Methodist Church, by the Rev. John B. Roe, on Sunday, Sept. 27 at 11:00 a.m. The remains were interred in the Elwood cemetery. __________
Martin Tilson was born Mattis Johnsson in Kopparmåla, Jämshög Parish, Blekinge Län, SWD, the son of John Johnsson Tille & Hanna Nilsdotter. After immigrating to America, he and his wife, Kjerstin Olsdotter, became Martin & Christine Tilson. ____________________
