Walter E. Ruff, 89, of 1122 N. Walnut, died Monday morning in a local hospital. Services will be Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church. The Rev. Eldor Meyer will officiate. There will be a family prayer service at 2:15 at the church. Burial will be in Grand Island Cemetery.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 3 to 9 p.m. at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the Trinity Lutheran Church.
Mr. Ruff was born May 27, 1887, on a farm northwest of Grand Island. He was the son of John and Wilhelmina Beyer Ruff. He attended Trinity Lutheran School and was confirmed by the Rev. Pau Matuschka, the church pastor.
On Aug. 9, 1911, he married Ida Kloninger at Bennington. They farmed north of Grand Island. In 1915 they moved to Omaha where he attended an auto school. He later moved to Vergas, Minn., where he owned and operated an auto sales and service agency. He sold it and opened a general merchandise store. In 1926 he sold this business and moved to Orange, Calif. In 1927 he returned to Grand Island and resumed farming. He retired in 1968.
Mr. Ruff was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church; the Lutheran Layman's League and he had served as treasurer of Lake Township Board for more than 10 years.
He is survived by his widow; two sons, Otto of Denver and Lawrence of Grand Island; one daughter, Mrs. Laura Bamesberger of Cherokee Village, Ark.; two sisters, Mrs. Clara Quandt of Anaheim, Calif., and Mrs. Rose Nau of Omaha, and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by seven brothers and three sisters. ____________________
