My grandfather Austin Allen Harrison, is a former resident of Lincoln and North Platte. In the latter half of the 1930s, he was driving down a local road when he noticed several emergency vehicles at the side of a frozen body of water. Upon getting out of his car, he was shocked to learn that two young boys had fallen through the ice. Even worse, he soon realized that none of the emergency personnel had the courage to dive in after them. And so my grandfather resolved that, if no one else would do it, he would dive right in and fish them out. This he did, thank God, for he soon found both boys. The first was alive and soon revived. The second though, I'm sorry to say, was already dead.
My Granddad never once talked of this, but I am desperate to find out anything I can about it. What are the North Platte/Lincoln area newspapers that would have been active at this time? Where might I find these? Are they in a searchable format somewhere?
Would the town hall in North Platte hold a death certificates index? Is there any similar source that would enable me identify a young, local male who drowned in the late 30s/early 40s?
Is there anyone I could ask? Are there any other sources that might be consulted? Thanks so much. ANY information you can provide will be so much appreciated.
