My great grandmother was Mary Ann Kennedy Giblin. She was born in Carbondale, PA, March 30, 1851, a child of Henry Kennedy and Ann Gall, Irish immigrants, who eventually settled and raised their family in Carbondale, PA.Two of her brothers moved to Nebraska, some time during the 1870s and/or 1880s.I have not been successful in finding them in the Nebraska 1880 Census, but did find them in the 1900 Census for Norfolk, Madison County.
1.Michael (Mike) Kennedy was born in Pennsylvania. He served as a private in Company F, 24th Pennsylvania Regiment Militia Infantry of 1862.Michael married Ellen Sheridan of Dunmore, PA.Their first child, Henry Kennedy, was born in Carbondale, PA, November 26, 1871, and baptized in St. Rose of Lima R.C. Church in that city.Their second child, Catherine, was born February 22, 1875, also in Carbondale, PA, and was also baptized at St. Rose Church.
The family moved to Nebraska. They had nine children, six of whom were still living at the time of the 1900 Census, and four of them who were still living with Michael and Ellen:Henry; Alice (born Dec. of 1879); Willie (born Jan. of 1885); and Eddie ( born March of1888).Alice, Willie, and Eddie were all born in Nebraska.Michel (note spelling) and Ellen, with Henry, William and Edward were still together in the 1910 Census.By the 1920 Census Ellen was a widow, and head of the household with sons William and Edward. Her son Henry married a woman named “Hattie” who had been born in Illinois, and they had two sons, Paul and Harrold.Henry would be widowed by the time of the 1930 Census and raising his two sons.Edward, one of Henry’s brothers, would be a single person residing as a lodger with a John Beck family.
2.Henry Kennedy was also born in Pennsylvania. He served as a private in Company D, 47th Pennsylvania Regiment Militia Infantry of 1863 during the Gettysburg campaign.Henry married an Irish immigrant, Elizabeth (Eliza) Gorman.Their first child, Mary Elizabeth (“Lizzie”) was born July 17, 1876, in Carbondale, PA, and baptized in St. Rose Church.Their second daughter, “Jennie”, was also born in Pennsylvania in March ofor May of 1878.Their third daughter, Agnes, was born in Nebraska about 1881 or 1882.Henry and Eliza living in Norfolk in the Census of both 1910 and 1930.There children were not with them.At the time of the 1930 Census Henry was an 83-year old widower, living by himself.
I would be interested in hearing from any descendants of Michael and/or Henry Kennedy to discuss the possible exchange of family information.
