Hi. Are you still looking? If so, some ideas. Also, the 1940 census, newly released, below.
Delbert Leroy Ray was born 18 December 1892 in Chapman, Merrick, Nebraska. You could write to Merrick County and ask for a copy of a birth record. They can supply this especially since you have his date of birth. His birth certificate should show his parents’ names.
Do you know the date and place Delbert married Florence? Their marriage certificate should show his parents’ names.
Delbert died 19 June 1962 in Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, California. You could write to Santa Barbara County for a copy of his death certificate. His death certificate should show his parents’ names.
Usually the fee for a certificate of this kind is modest. The costs of family history rise when seeking certificates for every event in every person’s life, but in this case, you have an unanswered question you’ve wondered about for years, so it may be worth the effort and expense.
You can expect, based on the census that shows Charles (head of household) with Charles’s father Andrew, and Charles’s brother Delbert, that there is a likelihood that Delbert is Andrew’s son. You are wondering though whether Delbert is a full brother, half-brother, adopted brother, etc.
Below is a 1993 obituary for Delbert’s daughter Lillian. It lists the married names of Delbert’s daughters and their place of residence at that time. It may be possible to contact one of the descendants, via internet “people find” services, or via Facebook. Likely a direct descendant of Delbert will know Delbert’s parents.
