Betty Jane JORDAN (born April 1852, Illinois) married Samuel OBERHOLTZER in Knox County, IL in 1872 and had one son born 1874 in Illinois also named Samuel OBERHOLTZER.Her husband died in Illinois 1873 or 1874 and by 1878 she had migrated to Lancaster County, NE with her young son.Her brother, William JORDAN (b. about 1855, Illinois) also went to Lancaster County, NE where he married Emma BAUM in 1878.
Betty Jane (JORDAN) OBERHOLTZER married Robert LAWS (b. about 1849, England) in 1878.Her son from her first marriage lived with them.They also had three sons of their own all born in Palmyra, Otoe County:George born 1879, Charles born 1881 and Robert born 1886.
At some point between 1886 and 1891, Betty Jane's husband, Robert LAWS, disappeared from the family.Betty Jane married for the third time to Thomas McCOY (b. about 1850, Ireland).The young Samuel OBERHOLTZER retained the name OBERHOLTZER, but the three sons from Betty Jane's marriage to Robert LAWS took the name McCOY.
Thomas McCOY had a 23 year career with the Burlington Missouri River Railroad.He came to Otoe County via Iowa.By 1891 the new family moved to Newcastle, WY and by the late 1890s had moved to Rapid City, South Dakota.
Thomas McCOY had at least one brother living with a wife and family in Palmyra in the 1870-80s.The brother's name was Joe McCOY and he is listed on the 1880 census with wife, Anne, and children Edward, James, and John.Joe and Anne born in Ireland and two children born in England and one in Iowa.
