The info' below could be useful to Cartlidge related persons who emigrated to the Trenton, New Jersey area in the later 1800's. I hve added details to certificates that Jeff Myer posted relating to New Jersey families. I live in north Staffordshire and find the Cartlidge name one of the widespread original names of the area, being of saxon origin. It originates on a specific location on the slopes a mile out of Leek town; like most surnames, probably given c. A.D.1330. The names you give that emigrated to Trenton include two Eardley marriages, which fall also in my main interests.

I confess my knowledge of CARTLIDGE's is limited, since I am related to them by marriage. Mary Ann TAMS (sister of my great grandmother Elizabeth TAMS) married Enoch Frederick CARTLIDGE in Staffordshire about 1880. They are listed with son Fred on the 1881 census. I found the death certificate for my Enoch CARTLIDGE. He was born July 6, 1861 and died in Trenton, NJ on April 5, 1918. His father was listed as Enoch also, and his mother as Fanny Rochley (the 1st letter of the last name is a guess.)
Now I have other CARTLIDGE paper documents, mainly death certificates. Another Enoch CARTLIDGE, age 70 died on February 16th, 1905. He was born in England. Parents were not known.
There was still another Enoch J.CARTLIDGE. He was born in Trenton, NJ on January 4, 1873, and died November 14, 1938. His father was also Enoch J. CARTLIDGE (of ENG), and his mother Jane D. McKee of (SCOT).
Florence C. CARTLIDGE, age 52, was born in NJ on August 31, 1884, and died on February 21, 1937. Her father was Stephen CARTLIDGE (of ENG), and her mother was Elizabeth SERGEANT (of ENG.)
Alfred CARTLIDGE, age 72, was born in ENG on March 23, 1867, and died in Trenton on February 25, 1940. Father was unknown, and mother was Sarah Hardley (1st letter of last name is a guess.)
James CARTLIDGE, age 72, was born in ENG on March 1, 1868, and died on March 27, 1940. His father was James CARTLIDGE (of ENG), and his mother was Elizabeth HEATON (of ENG). He was the husband of Hannah WOODCOCK.
Stephen CARTLIDGE, age 87, was born in Henley, ENG on December 25, 1853. He was the husband of Elizabeth SERGEANT. Parents were unknown.
I hope this helps you CARTLIDGE researchers!
First, the family of James and Jane Tams are in the 1881 England census, after returning from East Liverpool, Ohio, where thousands of other North Staffordshire people went to at the time, and where daughters Minnie and Alice were born. They quickly returned to New Jersey, where James died in 1883. The area of Cocknage outside Longton where they previously lived is still a very pleasant area.
Enoch Fred. Cartlidge’s parents Enoch C. and Sarah Frances Wrotchley, married at St. George’s, Newcastle under Lyme in 1859. The bride’s father, Thomas, was a watchmaker, who had married Sarah Whitehurst at neighbouring Wolstanton on 2nd Aug. 1829.
2). The Enoch Cartlidge who died in 1905 was born in June 1833 and apparently immigrated to Trenton in 1860. He is fairly certain to be the son of Enoch and Eliza Cartlidge of Norton in the Moors, next to Burslem, Staffordshire. He is the father of Enoch J; Ambrose, Albert and Jesse in Trenton. ENOCH James junior married Catherine shortly after the 1900 US census..
3). Stephen Cartlidge was born Xmas day 1853 in Woodland street, Tunstall, Staffordshire, and had seven siblings. His parents were Samuel Cartlidge and Caroline Moore, who had married at ST. John’s, Burslem in 1848. Samuel was dead by 1860 and the family moved to very poor lodgings at the Sytch at rear of Burslem town. He married Elizabeth Sergeant at St. Marks, Shelton in 1876, before arriving in Trenton in 1880. His mother remarried to a Mr. Millward.
4). Alfred Cartlidge was born 23rd March 1867, fifth of six children of Alfred and Sarah (nee Eardley), who had married at ST. Peter’s, Stoke in 1851. They lived in the Abbey Hulton area of Burslem parish. She was the daughter of Joseph and Joyce (Nee Nixon) Eardley of Norton in the Moors. They are part of the ancestral line of Robert Jack Eardley of East Liverpool, Ohio.
5). James Cartlidge was born March 1867 near Market Drayton, Shropshire, eldest child of James and Elizabeth (nee Eaton). The parents were both from Burslem, where they married in 1866. His grandparents were James and Maud. He married Hannah Woodcock and both arrived in the USA in Nov. 1886, where they ended up in Chicago. They were in Akron, Ohio in 1910 with children Rowland and Ida. Eventually both were in Trenton.
