The artists mark on the photograph is for this photographer.Dowe was a traveling photographer.
If you could find out, from the photograph, about the time period it was taken, we could figure out where the photographer was working at that time.Dowe and Rifenburg, were taveling in various California towns from a base in Fresno about the 1880's. He was also in Reno, Nevada late 1880's into about 1892.He was also in Lovelock, Nevada, but was probably traveling Nevada. He was in Salinas City in 1886, San Jose in 1895-97
In the Multnomah country, Oregon website for 1879-1880 he was known to have been there also.
I find Oscar S. Dowe in 1900 census in Inyo, California, then 1920 in Mendocinoa, Fort Bragg California, also 1930 in Fort Bragg. In 1930 he was 76 and retired.
If you can narrow down the time frame of the photograph then we could figure out where he was.Check in the town you are in to see if there is a museum or a historical society that can help you.If not, then if you could, get to me a copy of the pictures, I will ask Lee Brumbaugh, Nevada Historical Society, Reno, Nevada, Curator of photography, to assist.I am a docent there.
We have two good photographer research books there we can use.
