Has anyone ever confirmed the ancestry of the John R. Belt (abt. 1773 - abt. 1843) who married Nancy Ann Swaney (03-21-1777 - July 1831 Decatur Co., IN)? John and Nancy might have been born in Pennsylvania. Information that I have seen shows John's parents as John and Lucy Unknown Belt. John Sr. was supposedly Captain of a British man of war ship, but I have found no records of this. I have checked British records online, but no Captain John Belt is mentioned. There is, however, a Captain Joseph Belt on the American side, master of several American merchant ships. The story is that John Sr. went off to sea near the end of the Revolutionary War and was never heard from again. John Jr. was separated from his (widowed?) mother, taken into the army at an early age and was a teamster. After his military service he married Nancy Ann Swaney (abt. 1791) who was supposedly of Dutch ancestry. I read that Nancy's parents may not have been able to speak English, but since the name Swaney is not Dutch, that seems doubtful. At various times, John and Nancy may have lived in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana. Does anyone have information about this John Belt and family? Are they related to the Maryland Belt family? Any information would be helpful.
