Thank you. I have Morris and Malisa's marriage license. Whoever wrote her name spelled it "Bakn," which someone read as "Baker" for the marriage index. However, I know from my grandfather and other documents that Malisa's maiden name was Bacon. She and Morrison were married June 5, 1854, in Sangamon County, Ill., by Tilford Clark, a Baptist preacher. I can't find them on the 1860 census, but in 1870 they are in Athens, Menard County, Ill., with five children and Thomas Bacon. ("Narsis" is Morris.) Joseph Meacham, 10, is my g-gf. His full name was Joseph Nathan, named, I believe, for Morris's and Malisa's fathers. Thomas Bacon is Thomas Jefferson Bacon, whi I believe was Malisa's brother. By 1880, Morris and Malisa had separated. I don't know why. He was living in Springfield with his mother and sister and brother-in-law. Malisa and Joseph were living in Sangamon County with Samuel and Mary Meacham Michael (Malisa's daughter). I don't know where the other children were. Malisa resided with her unmarried son, Thomas Joshua, until her death. Apparently, Rebecca Bacon moved from Darke County, Ohio, to Logan County, Ill., sometime before 1860. 1860 United States Federal Census 1860 United States Federal Census Name: Rebecca Bacon Age in 1860: 45 Birth Year: abt 1815 Birthplace: New York Home in 1860: Lake Fork, Logan, Illinois Gender: Female Post Office: Mount Pulaski Value of real estate: View image Household Members: Name Age Wm Bacon 22 Rebecca Bacon 45 T P Bacon 13 J K P Bacon 11 "TP" Bacon doesn't match "Thomas J." from the lawsuit, but I believe he's the same person and the Thomas Bacon on the 1870 census. JKP Bacon must be James K. Polk Bacon from the lawsuit, but I can't find any further trace of him. A granddaughter of Mary Meacham Michael said Rebecca remarried to a man named Russell, and Thomas Jefferson Bacon's death certificate shows his mother's maiden name as Elizabeth Russell, which is hard to explain. Possibly Rebecca was Rebecca Elizabeth or Elizabeth Rebecca -- but that's just a guess. Descendants of Thomas Jefferson Bacon continued to live in Sangamon and Logan counties.
