CHANCEY/CHAUNCEY J. TERRILL (b: 1801 Conn.) and wife Mary ?? were early pioneers who resided in the City of Albany ~1827-1840. The wife, Mary, may have been born and her family resided in Albany, and young Chauncey (or Chancey - dropping the 'u'- as it was later spelled) may have moved there as a young single, batchelor from Conn., where he met and married MARY ?? there ~1826-7, and they began their family. All 4 of their known children were born there between 1828-38, before they moved to Ashtabula Co., OH in the early-mid 1840s, and on again to Cleveland, OH by 1845. By 1870, CHANCEY & MARY TERRILL appear in the Census data of Kewanee, Henry Co., IL. He died there two years later on 1 Aug 1872, and she on 16 Mar 1874. A check of the County Recorder for Henry County in 2005 revealed 'no records', and no death/burial records for either of them were found. Their 4 children, all of whom were born in Albany, NY were:
1. ALAN JACKSON TERRILL (17 Apr 1828 Albany, NY - 15 Dec 1903, Erie Co., PA).
2. JOHN L. TERRILL (30 May 1833 Alb., NY - 12 Nov 1906 IA). He md: Elizabeth Jane Pogue in Jan 1862 in Oquawka, IL and they had 6 children.
3. MARTHA E. TERRILL. (Born Alb., NY 1830). Nothing more is known of her.
4. AMY ANN TERRILL. (Born Alb., NY 1838). Nothing further is known of her, either. All 4 children were alive as of the 1850 Ashtabula co., OH Census.
CHAUNCY's occupation was listed in the a 1849 Cleveland City Directory as a "Moroccan Dresser", which is a tanner of goat and sheep hides used in women's fine clothing and book binding. The Henry Co., IL 1870 Census lists his occupation as 'leather store', which is consistent. Chancey's wife, Mary, is also noted in the 1850 & 70 census as being born somewhere in 'NY', in 1804 (as her given age in the 1870 Census was then listed as being '66', but some genealogy reports inaccurately show her as born in "1807"). Her maiden name, exact date and place of birth, and parentage is unknown. She died (presumably in Henry Co., IL) on 16 Mar 1874. However, one genealogy listing show her burial location as being as 'Ctr. Grove Cem., Thompkins Twp., but the county and state isn't noted. Presumably, it is in Henry Co., IL. They must have moved from Ohio to Illinois sometime after 1857 (when I found land records, Page 284, in the Ashtabula Co., OH microfische LDS records noting a sale of real estate by 'Chancey & Mary Terrill' of a Warranty Deed on Apr 18, 1857 to a F. Fickinger, Jr. of '40 acres S. of South Ridge Rd., Kingsville Twp., Ashtabula Co., OH'. There were 3 other recorded sales of land by Chancey Terrill, as 'Grantor' (seller), but I couldn't locate when he (or they) originally purchased the land or the extent of their holdings. They do NOT appear to be original Grantees or initial recipients of land held by the 'Connecticut Land Co.' (prev. known as the 'Conn. Western Reserve') when
the land was freshly 'liberated' from the local Indians by a group of Conn. investors and land speculators (who got the 1.2 million acre tract for 42 cents/acre). Another sale was noted on 11 Sep 1853 to a T. T. Richmond and J. Murray of a Warranty Deed of '32/100 a. in Lot 20 & Und(er) 1/2 of a water privilege and dam & c.' (also on Page 284). A third sale was noted to a William Welpley on 14 Apr 1851 of '32/100a. in Lot 20 & und(er) 1/2 of the water privilege & dam' (on Page 283). There was also a sale by a 'Mary Terrill' to an E. M. Dickinson on 16 aug 1847 of a Warranty Deed of '50 a. in Lot 29'. This is presumably the wife of Chancey, but it is unknown why this one parcel was owned by her, or recorded in her name, alone. No further real estate transactions were noted after 1857. The next document I could find was the 1870 Census in Kawanee, Henry Co., IL, with the two of them living alone.
After extensive searches, thus far, I stil can't pinpoint the exact location in 'CT' of his birth, or the exact date of his birth - or the identity of his parents. Numerous 'TERRILLS', who are descendants of 1600s English immigrants, ROGER TERRILL and ABIGAIL UFFORD, are noted in Milford, New Haven, and Woodbridge, Connecticut area in the late 1700s. After a fairly exhausting search, I still can't make a nexus to the next generation and parentage of CHANCEY (or 'CHAUNCEY') TERRILL. I have about a dozen possible candidates, but all of them look equally probably, unfortunately. So, I have 'hit the wall' at this time as to the origins of 'CHANCEY/CHAUNCEY TERRILL and his wife 'MARY ?'.
Before moving to Ohio (sometime between 1838 when their last child was born in Albany Co., NY) and
1847 (when a I found the first real estate transaction was noted in Ashtabula Co., OH), the family resided in Albany
Co., NY. I located the name of 'CHAUNCEY TERRILL' (note the adding of a 'U' in his first name) in Albany City Directory for 1829-30, but their names are missing from the 1830 NY Census. Also, the directory lists a 's.' (presumably 'spouse' as a 'PEARL', and the nexus the names 'PEARL' and 'MARY' are unknown to me. I have extensively searched the Albany Co., NY records for further information about them. They are not in the 1820 Census, and with him ostensibly being born in '1801', he would have been too young to be listed as 'head of household' in the 1810 Census. It is possible that his entire family may have moved from where ever he was born in CT in 1801 to Albany, and he actually grew up there. When and where CHANCEY TERRILL and wife, 'MARY ?' met, courted, and were married is unknown, but likely either in Albany, NY, where their first child (Allen Jackson Terrill)was born in 1828 (and she listed her POB as 'NY' in later Censuses), or her family could have moved from 'NY' to 'CT', where he was born, then they got married and they moved back to Albany before starting a family there. I think it more likely that she was from Albany, and he moved there as a bachelor, he courted and married her there, and they resided there giving birth to their 4 children before moving to Ohio sometime between 1838-1847.
I descend from the line of CHANCEY's son, JOHN L. TERRILL(noted above), and his daughter, EMILY LAVERA TERRILL(1875-19300, who married ROBERT LEROY SCOTT, and had two children, including my mother, VALETTA FLORENCE HOFF(1912 Boise, ID - now age 93 living in Des moines, IA), who in 1934 in Des Moines, IA married JOHN RICHARD HOFF (1909-1970), and they had two sons, including my brother, ROBERT TENNANT HOFF (b: 1948), and me, JOHN SCOTT HOFF (b: 1946). I have two adult children: JOHN BARON HOFF (1984) and JENNIFER JO HOFF (1982).
I would welcome any help, insight or assistance. Feel free to contact me directly at JOHN SCOTT HOFF or call (312) 346-8111, or write at 20 So. Clark St. #2210, Chicago, IL 60603-1816.
