Edwin Leo HANHILAMMI changed his name to HAMILTON in 1939.He was born 19 Oct 1910 in Rockport, Mass., the 4th of 13 children born to Alfred HANHILAMMI and Helmi VAHAVIHU.His wife, Frances (BROWN) HAMILTON GAYLORD was born 22 Dec 1913 in (the dau of Merton O. BROWN & Anna Phoebe RICHMOND) & she died 7 Dec 2009 in Fredricksburg, Virginia at age 95. The following was written by Frances, the wife of Edwin L. HANHILAMMI / HAMILTON.
"I remember" written by Frances (BROWN) HAMILTON GAYLORD. "ED and his father did some plastering for a house that my father was fixing up for a hired man that worked for him. My Dad used to laugh about the time he hired Ed's Dad to do the work. He asked Mr. HANHILAMMI if he needed anyone to help him & the reply was that he had 13 children & one of them would help him. So Ed came with his Dad to work. I was a senior in high school & when I saw ED, I was "smitten" on him. He was bashful at first, but before the work was finished he asked if he could come & see me. That was the start of our relationship. ED joined the Coast Guary in July 1931. For awhile he was stationed in Ashtabula. Then he was in Buffalo for awhile. He then spent some time in New London, CT. After that he went to Pascagoula, MS. He spent the last two years in service in Hawaii. He got out of the service in September 1937. He came home and we got married on November 20, 1937. While ED was in Hawaii, I enrolled in Ashtabula Business College. I was working for D.M.Webb Motor Co. when we got married. On February 9, 1938 (Dorothy BARRTENFIELD's birthday), we left Astabula for California. We didn't have a car so AL and BILL (ED's brothers) drove us to San Pedro, California. ED got a job as a radio operator on the boats in the harbor. He soon got a job with Western Airlines. We lived in Burbank for a short time and were transferred to Las Vegas, Nevada (1938-1939). He then got a job with Chicago & Southern Airlines in Memhis, TN. from November 1939 to October 1940. He put in an application with the Federal Aviation Agency and was hired and we moved to Atlanta, GA. ANNE was a baby. ED was transferred to work at LA Guardia Airport in New York & he arried there on December 7th, 1941, the day the Japs bombed Pearl Harbor. In August 1943, we moved to Jacksonville, FL. At this time ED was made Chief of Operations at the Jacksonville Center. RICHARD was born there. In September 1946, we moved to Atlanta, GA again. ED worked in the Regional Office. In September 1948 we moved to Washington D.C. ED worked in Headquarters Office, and we first lived in Maryland and then moved to the house in Manassas, VA. We lived in Manassas when ED died. His work with the Federal Aviation Agency was an important job. The Agency helped to control air traffic from one place to another. He got into the Agency when it was fairly new & he was able to advance quite fast. Everytime we moved from one place to another it was an advancement for him. In the D.C. office he wrote a book on "Rules and Regulations" and received letters of recognition from various Agencies. He was a very brilliant man. ED worked from October 1940, with the Federal Aviation Agency until he died. He was still on active duty with them. He was getting ready to retire when he died. Through his job he had visited every state in the Union. In 1939, ED & FRANCES lived in Las Vegas, NV.ED worked for Western Air Lines & needed to use his last name a lot.He wrote his folks and explained the situation & asked to change his name. They gave their consent & ED and FRANCES decided on the name HAMILTON. At that time none of the other members were interested in changing their names. They want to a lawyer and the change was made legal. So their children were born under the name of HAMILTON. EDWIN LEO HAMILTON died September 16, 1966 of cancer of the lung which spread to the rest of his body. He is buried in Arlington Cemetery, Washington, D.C. April 20, 1969 FRANCIS OLIVE (BROWN) HAMILTON married WALTER JOHN GAYLORD, SR. He was born in Willoughby, OH on March 12, 1922." - -the end - - - - - - - - - NOTE: Walter John GAYLORD died 20 May 2009 in Fredricksburg, Stafford co, VA at age 87.
