Subject born 1812 and raised in Egypt Valley, Kirkwood Twnshp.No formal schooling after age 8.Read from father's library, and learned enough to teach school.Began reading law in firm of Shannon & Alexander, admitted to bar in 1835.Married Sarah Ridgeway same year.Practiced in St. Clairsville a few years, then to Cadiz.Moved to Huntington, Indiana 1846.Practiced law there. Vocal opponent to Lincoln Administration and the Civil War.Arrested for treason in 1864, tried in Indianapolis before military commission, found guilty and sentenced to be hanged.In prison 18 months, finally got attention of US Supreme Court.Held, military commission had no jurisdiction over civilian if civil courts are opened. Ordered released.Famous (among lawyers)case:Ex parte Milligan. Returned to Huntington and law practice, until died 1899.Probably only Ohio lawyer sentenced to be hanged.
