A Grierson - Greenhow Reunion and the Annual Gretna Green Festival will be held on Saturday, August 31, 2002 at the Aberdeen Lion's Park in Aberdeen, Ohio (corner of Market Place and High Street on the riverbank of the Ohio River).Festivities will begin at 10 a.m.Food and drinks will be available at the Festival.Bring your lawn chairs and plan to stay all day and enjoy Story Telling, Bagpipe Music, Scottish Highland Dancers, Musical Entertainment and Weddings, real ones in the traditional "Gretna Green" manner. If you are planning on getting married or renewing your vows this would certainly be a wonderful setting.
Couples came to Ohio to get married because the requirements and bond payments were not as restrictive as in the other states. This same situation existed in Scotland and many English couples crossed over the border to get married in the little Scottish town of Gretna Green.Lists will be available of some of the over 32,000 marriages performed by the "Marrying Squires" of Aberdeen, Ohio; which became known as the "Gretna Green of America".There will also be tables setup for genealogy research and sharing. Historical Societies will be on hand with resources.
