Josiah Leavitt is buried in Mutual, Champaign Co, OH. The death date on the tombstone is 24 June 1855, but unfortunately the yrs, mos, days has broken off in parts. It appears to be 70 yrs, (?) mos, 27 days. I just have him born circa 1785 in NH (1850 census in Champaign Co, OH gives his place of birth as NH). I have found NO marriage record for him to: Hannah RAWLINS, b. 24 Jan 1793, Deerfield (?), NH. I have **guessed* that they were married circa 1814 in NH.
Children: 1. Greenleaf, b. 23 Nov 1815, d. 31 Oct 1841 2. George L., b. 2 Apr 1820, d. 22 Aug 1882, m. Nancy BANE/BAIN . . . 7. Ruhama C., b. 24 Jul 1834, d. 21 May 1905 Shawnee Co, KS
I am looking and looking for an obituary for Ruhama, because I think that is where it says she was born in Grafton, NH, (and perhaps gives an account of their migration to Ohio by boat). Does anyone have a copy of it??
As for Josiah, I have tried for 19 years to find his parentage AND a record of his marriage. I have much secondary evidence of his marriage to Hannah Rawlins, but I have never found a marriage record.
Josiah left no will, had no estate to administer, and the only property he held was GIFTED to him by his son George late in his life. In 1833-34 he was living in Springfield, NH. But in 1840 he is on the Champaign Co, OH census. So the family moved to Ohio sometime between 1834-1840 along with the MOODY, KINSMAN, and other families.
I have tried to trace the other sisters of Ruhama for more clues regarding Josiah, but they married men with very common surnames (ALLISON, YOUNG, GARDNER). One sister, Sarah, died unmarried in 1900, and her estate gives residences for the living relatives at that time. I keep hoping another county history or obituary will give some more clues in learning about Josiah's elusive ancestry.
