Scott Family, Wagon Train, Ohio to KS, Grasshoppers,

By Clifford Scott July 11, 2011 at 08:06:53

According to incomplete family history, my great grandfather Gilbert Scott, who was living in Delaware County, Indiana at the time, joined a wagon train that started in Ohio and went to Kansas. He was in Indiana for the 1870 census and a son was born in Kansas in Nov. 1872. So, he must have gone to KS sometime between those two dates. His 1st crop was hailed out and his 2nd was destroyed by grasshoppers. They then decided to move back to Indiana.
I have never been able to learn where they lived while in Kansas. However, I have found some info saying that in 1870-1871, a number of families from Clermont County, Ohio went to Kansas and settled in the area of Ohio Township in Morris County, Kansas. Also, there was a grasshopper plague in 1874 that ruined their crops.
Does anyone have any information that might shed some more light on this Ohio to Kansas journey?
