Researching the family of Andrew Painter who appears in the 1840 census in Liberty Township, Clinton County, Ohio. His household consisted of the following: m. aged 40 to 50 [Andrew] f. aged 30 to 40 [Catherine Hedgewich?] f. aged less than 5 [unidentfied] f. aged 5 to 10 [unidentfied] m. aged 5 to 10 [Isaac] m. aged 10 to 15 [John] m. aged 15 to 20 [George Washington]
Andrew Painter, whose occupation was farming, is a shadowy figure. He appears in the 1830 census in Washington Township, in adjacent Warren County, Ohio.
There is an Andrew Painter in the 1820 census in Muskingum County, in east-central Ohio. The ages of this Andrew and the adult female in the household track with the 1830 and 1840 censuses. An Andrew Painter married one Elizabeth Minick in 1814 in Muskingum County.
We have a high degree of certainty about the identity of the three boys in the 1840 census. All lived well into the Twentieth Century. The death certificates of George Washington Painter (1821-1920), John Painter (1832-1919), and Isaac Painter (1836/7-1919) all identify their father as Andrew Painter.Only John Painter's death certificate, however, gives the name of his mother: "Catherine Hedgewich" from Pennsylvania. My father search census indices for Pennsylvania (1800-50) and for Ohio (1820-50), but found no surnames even remotely close to "Hedgewich."
Andrew Painter fails to appear for the 1850 census, when the names of the other members of the household were first recorded.By the time of that census, George Washington Painter was 29 years old, John 17 or 18, and Isaac 13 or 14.If Isaac's parents had passed away, where was he living? My father has found an Isaac Painter living in the household of one Joel Painter in nearby Madison County, Ohio. This Isaac Painter was reported to be 14 years old, and born in Ohio; apparently a match.
The relationship between Joel Painter and Andrew Painter-if any-is unknown. Both were about the same age, and both were born in Virginia. There is one additional clue.Living near Joel Painter was 17-year-old Elizabeth Harr.George Washington Painter married an Elizabeth Harr in Springfield, Ohio, in 1853.
Can anyone provide corroborating or additional information? We are very interested in identifying the two young girls in Andrew Painter's household, presumably daughters. We can provide considerable information about the descendants of George Washington and Isaac Painter, and have begun to track the descendants of John Painter.
