A History of Lorain County, published in 1879, provides some clues to Chauncey and James Emmons. The History says:
"Chauncy and James Emmons were the first settlers on Butternut Ridge, in the township, settling in 1814".
The township referred to is Ridgeville Twp. in Lorain County. They were enumerated in Ridgeville township, in Cuyahoga County in the census of 1820, and in Lorain County in subsequent census listings. The reason for this was not a move on their part, but the fact that Lorain County was not organized until 1824. Apparently, the area they were living inwas enumerated as part of Cuyahoga County in 1820. While there is not a lot of information on them in the history, the name James Emmons appears in the biography of the Terrelll family in the township. It may provide a clue to where James was living before moving to Ohio. The information briefly is that:
Tillotson Terrell and family (wife and three children) made the first settlement in the township on July 6,1810. He came from Waterbury, Conn.. He was born May 1,1785. He had a sister named Lydia born Nov. 1,1787. This sister married James Emmons in 1807. They susequently had 13 children, and she died at age 84 on Oct. 25,1871.
It appears that most of the Terrell family eventually migrated to Ohio, and more information about this family is contained in the history. However, if the James Emmons that Lydia married in 1807 is the same James Emmons that you are researching, which seems probable, you may be able to trace James and Chauncey back to Conn..
There are a couple of other references to persons with the Emmons surname in the Ridgeville Twp. history. Perhaps these are sons of James and Chauncey, but no connection is made in the history. A Lydia Louisa Sexton, born Nov. 26,1834, married Harlo C. Emmons. The history indicates that she was left a widow in March 1869. A Harris Emmons is briefly mentioned twice. The first time, he along with his wife and daughter, were part of the seven founding members of the Methodist church formed on Butternut Ridge in 1825. The other reference indicates that a Truman Walker was the first settler on Chestnut Ridge in 1813 or 1814. Harris Emmons located farther west on the same road in 1818.
