It has been probably at least 15 years since I worked on the SMITH family, so I need to refresh my memory as I review my notes.
I show Jacob SMITH estate appraised 13 Jan. 1844 by Samuel MYERS, Chandler TUTTLE, Peter HESS, widow's and children's allowance granted. [names not given, Note: Samuel MYERS also adm. for the estate of Mathias SMITH in 1829.]
I have in Chancery Ct. Rec. B:331
July 1845 Abigail SMITH is widow of Jacob M. SMITH.Heirs Harriet, Elizabeth, Sarah Ann, Benj., Matthias, Nancy Jane, & Phoebe Frances all minors under 18 and 21.
How does the Phebe SMITH [male 15-20, female age 30-40, female age 40-50] in 1830 Jefferson Twp. tie in with this family?Or does she?
My Peter WINDLE, Sr. in 1820 was in Paint Township. In looking for Peter, Jr.'s wife Elizabeth SMITH, I started with those SMITHs also in 1820 Paint Twp., those being Matthias, Catharine, and Jeremiah.
I had tentatively eliminated Matthias on the basis of his son Milan being listed as born in 1812 in Rockbridge Co., VA, and everything was fairly consisent that my Elizabeth was born about 1809 in Ohio. Thanks for the additional information on being able to eliminate him.
Catherine above of the 1820 census was the widow of Bruton SMITH of Monroe Co., WV.Bruton's will was written there 9 Apr. 1809, and probated in June 1809.He named his wife Catherine, son Jeremiah, and daughters Sally, Nancy KILPATRICK, Polly and Elizabeth. Her son Jeremiah is NOT the one in Fayette County, but the one in Highland County who died there 30 Oct. 1858, age 84 [born about 1774.]To add to the confusion Bruton and Catherine's daughter Sarah "Sally" SMITH married on 25 July 1822 to Abraham WINDLE [born 1785/6] brother to my Peter WINDLE, Jr. who married Elizabeth SMITH.Sarah died 22/28 Sep. 1879, age 95 years, 4m, 12, days, placing her birth as about 1784.The mother Catherine herself is listed as having died 1 Nov. 1844, age 100.I don't know what happened to Bruton and Catherine's daughter Elizabeth, but she would have had to have been born well before my Elizabeth about 1809.
As for Jeremiah his obituary states he was born in Pendleton Co., VA 26 June 1785, and died 28 Mar. 1886, age 100 years, 9 months and two days.He married Rachel PARRETT in 1803, [sic, marriage bond is dated 8 April 1805 in Rockbridge Co., VA] and moved to Fayette County in 1805.His wife died in 1824, and in 1825 he married Rosanna BOWEN who died 3 Apr. 1876.He had 12 children, 8 by his first wife, and 4 by his last, of which one son and 6 daughters are living. He had 63 grandchildren and 72 great-grandchildren.
For his children I know he had by his first wife:
1. Samuel b. ca. 1806; m. 1831 Chirstina LIFE; d. 29 June 1878 Fayette Co.
2. Rachel 4 Oct. 1811; m. 1850 Jerome DRAIS; died 18 Dec. 1886 Fayette Co.
3. Sarah b. ca. 1812; m. 1831 Robert GOLDSBURY; d. 22 June 1886 Fayette Co.
4. Levi b. 20 May 1819; m. 1842 Elizabeth BOEN/BEEN; d. 26
Feb. 1899 Fayette Co.
5. Mary b. 20 Oct. 1822; m. 1844 John COIL; living 1870
1. Matilda b. 1828; m. 1856 David UNDERWOOD; d. 1913 Fayette Co.
2. Nancy b. 7 June 1832; m. 1857 Daniel WALLACE; d. 30 Oct. 1913
That leaves 3 children by his first wife, and 2 by his second not accounted for.Four of the above daughters were known to be living when Jeremiah died, leaving two more. My Elizabeth (SMITH) WINDLE died 10 Oct. 1888.
Of course there are a number of other SMITH families living in Fayette County in 1820 that were not in Paint Twp., in addition to the three that were.
Yes, Joseph PARROT's wife was Anna Maria WENDEL, anglicized and went by Mary.See my WENDEL site for more: http://home.netcom.com/~fzsaund/wendel.htmlhttp://home.netcom.com/~fzsaund/wendel.html
