Stories of Guernsey Co., Ohio” by William Wolfe, page 931: "One of the first to settle on Pultney Ridge was Ezekial Vance who came from Fayette County, Pennsylvania and purchased the Southeast quarter of Section 10 and the Southwest quarter of Section 4. This land is now known as the Grier farm and a member of the family possesses the original deeds showing the purchase from the Stubenville land office where the sales of land in the Seven Ranges were made. The deeds were signed by President James Madison."
