Hi.I am very confused about the Houcks of Knox County, Ohio circa 1800 – 1900. I have that Jacob Henry Houck (b. abt. 1782, d. 4/19/1850, inventory taken in Knox Co., OH, 5/1850) migrated to Knox County, Ohio circa 1811 or so and laid out the town of Centerburg.I have that he married Rhoda Jennings.I also have that his parents were William Houck and probably Sophia Wages.Which this makes sense to me because he had a daughter named Sophia who married Wm. Best. Also I have that he had a brother James Houck who married Sarah Shadley and they also had a daughter named Sophia who married Amos Reynolds. Now the question I have is regarding a Washington Houck (b. 1799, d. 1888 in Bladensburg, OH) who married first to Sophia Pinyard and second to Avaline Bebout. In the History of Knox County, Ohio they have a bio for Washington Houck. It states that he was "son of William and Ellen Houck".I am assuming that his parents were William Houck and Eleanor (Ellen) Hall.Which if this is true then William Houck and Sophia Wages cannot be his parents. But then in a later "FROM BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD OF KNOX COUNTY, OHIO:TO WHICH IS ADDED AN ELABORATE COMPENDIUM OF NATIONAL BIOGRAPHY" there is a biography of Washington Houck's son the famous Knox County lawyer, Lewis B. Houck, which states the following" LEWIS B. HOUCK . . . etc. . . .He was born in the village of Bladensburg, Knox county, April 19, 1867, and belongs to one of the pioneer families. His grandfather, William Houck, who resided in Huntingdon county, Pennsylvania, served his country as a soldier in the war of the Revolution. His son,Washington Houck, the father of our subject, was a native of the Keystone state and in 1822 started from Huntingdon county, PA . . . etc.His uncle, Jacob Houck, laid out the town of Centerburg, Knox county, in 1817, and thus the family contributed in a large measure to the work of advancement and progress in the early days of Ohio's history. Washington Houck was united in marriage to Avaline Bebout, who was born in Clay township, etc.
Now how can the Jacob Houck who laid out the town of Centerburg be Lewis B. Houck's uncle because as far as I can tell Washington Houck and Jacob Houck have different parents?
Does anyone have any thoughts about this? Thanks so much for your time.
