I am seeking men age 6 or older or women age 10 or older with either a direct ancestor who was a Union soldiers in the Civil War or whose direct ancestor was a sibling of a Union soldier. The purpose is to obtain members for the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (formed in 1881) and the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic (also formed 1881).Both are chartered by Congress and are older hereditary societies that the D.A.R. and S.A.R. are for the American Revolution.
Both are organizations are growing in West Virginia with chapters in Martinsburg, Spencer, and Franklin.
Anyone needing assistance to prove a Union ancestor will receive it.
There is free meeting space for the Sons of Union Veterans in Ironton at the old G.A.R. hall so I understand.
