Recently, I was reading a local history which gave the following info re burnt records from the April 3d, 1875 courthouse fire. -Auditor's office: some books lost, many books were in a vault & escaped destruction -Treasury: money, books & papers were carried under guard to First National Bank -Clerk of Courts: all saved -County Recorder: all saved -Sheriff's office: most saved -Prosecuting Attorney's office: total loss -Probate Judge's office: limited portion saved, saved several books & a few original inventories, they requested that people re-register/re-record. Will records entirely destroyed. 2 volumes of marriage records saved. Deeds entered after April 14th, 1874 destroyed. In order to proceed with business, many births, wills, etc. were re-recorded with personal certified copies, etc.
Another fire March 29th, 1879 only destroyed the clock tower - no records lost.
