Thanks for your quick response. It appears that Joseph is in Ohio only from late 1860's until about 1878. By 1880 Joseph and his wife Mary are in Jasper County, Iowa. No children are listed with them. In the 1885 Iowa County Census, children Sarah, Ida, Zoa, and Frank are listed with Joseph and Mary, while Hattie (name listed as Kattie) is still living with the Davis family. While at the library yesterday I checked the 1880 census on CD for Iowa and found all the children I had listed from my interview source (with the exception of a daughter Alice Thomas). Sarah was living with a John F. and Angelina Fugard and a Noble Borders. Sarah and Noble births are listed as in Ohio. Hattie is living with a C.M. and Mary Davis family (born in KY). Zoa is listed as Loa and living with George D. and Eleen Littleton. George Littleton and Zoa are listed with a birth in Ohio, while Ellen and children Eva and Henry with birth in Illinois. My thinking is that Joseph may have fought with a unit from Ohio in the Civil War and located there from Amherst County, Virginia. I believe that children Sarah, Ida, Hattie, and possibly Zoa are from a marriage to a Sarah Palmer in Licking County, Ohio. I believe that after Sarah's death that Joseph married a Mary (who is listed in the Iowa census as having been born in Ohio) and they are the parents of Frank and Alice.
I do know from re-reading Joseph's obit in the Charlottesville, Va. paper that he lived in Charlottesville for 1905 until his death in 1920.
Thanks for the suggestion of the Licking County Genealogical Society. I will follow-up on that.
