Silvina M. Sheldon (daughter of Benjamin Sheldon, Sheldon Family Association No. 6161) was b. in New York October 2, 1817. In census records, her name is spelled "Sylphina" and "Silvina." We are fortunate to have our Family Bible that denotes Benjamin, spouse, and children, including Silvina. She was my gg-grandfather David F. Sheldon's sister.
The SFA has her married to a Bradley B. Woodman, who is listed in the 1840 US Census in NY, Onondaga, Skaneateles. We have not been able to find further information on Bradley B. "Woodman."
While researching our roots in Lorain County, OH, in November 2004, I came accross a cemetery index notation:
LaGrange Twp. Cemetery: WOODMANSEE, Polly, dau BB&SM; 19y 2m d. February 6, 1864.
Benjmin Sheldon and Lovisa (Rice) Sheldon are also at rest in this cemetery, and I visited their headstones while there. The shorter days' sunlight during the late fall didn't allow me to find Polly's headstone when I returned to the cemetery that day.
The parents initials "BB&SM" matched, so with this hunch and researching the US Census records, I found:
1860 US Census - OH, Lorain County, LaGrange Twp.
BB, age 47
Sylphina, age 44
Benjamin, age 22
Polly, age 15
David, age 8
1870 US Census - OH, Lorain County, LaGrange Twp.
Bradley B. (head), age 57
Silvina M. (wife), age 52
David, age 18
Benjamin (head), age 32
Jane (wife), age 25
Lilly, age 5
Lula, age 3
Charley, age 1
Now, they are nowhere to be found in the 1880 Census. However, I was able to locate additional information as follows:
LaGrange Twp. Cemetery, LaGrange, Lorain County OH:
WOODMANSEE, David F. 1852-1919; Ida L. KNAPP, wife, 1857-1907.
Newspaper: The Elyria Republic September 19, 1907: Obituary for Ida Woodmansee, date of death September 6, 1907.
Newspaper: Lorain County Reporter, July 22, 1893:
"Mr. Bradley Woodmansee and wife, and Mr. David Woodmansee were called to Gratiot County, Michigan, to see Mr. Benjamin Woodmansee, who was very sick and not exptected to live. He died Friday, July 14."
Then, with the exception of the above, Ida's obituary and the notation of David's cemetery interment and one more US Census for David only, these families dissappear.
If this sounds at all familiar, I would appreciate hearing from you. I will not be able to answer any other questions about the Woodmansee family because this is all I know, but if names and places match your records, this might turn out to be a different story!
We have more information about this Sheldon family.
Thank you in advance for your assistance.
