Does anyone know of any churches that may have handled adoptions around 1920's in Mahoning country, OH????
This is the info I need: I am trying to find out my biological grandfathers birth parents. He was born Jan. 13, 1919 (though I know some families have been known to change the dates) but this is what is listed under the SS death index. Irwin, Joseph 186-07-9420 Born: January 13, 1919 Died: December 1982 My grandfather was Joseph Irwin who was the adopted son of Arthur and Mary Irwin or Venango County, PA.I thought he was born in Youngstown, OH but someone recently told me the 1930 census but his birth in PA??? My aunt said the story she was told was that the birth mother got pregnant by a man going off to war and he never returned. The mother kept him with her for a while then gave him up for adoption. This would lead me to believe this the truth because he isn't listed in the Feb 4 of 1920 census with the Irwin family. We now hope he was still with the CURRAN/CURREN in Mahoning county somewhere. in the 1920 census.
The adoption may have taken place through a church somewhere. My aunt said she thought he was born in Youngstown but apparently this was something that was never talked about and I am the only one who cares and everyone older that may have cared has died. My aunt also said that she could remember meeting the birth mother when she was about 14 and thought the last name was Currin or a variation of. She also seems to think the Currin's/Curran’s/Curren’swe are looking for to check this info were from Czechoslovakia. However all this is going on what she was told and even she is skeptical as to if this info is true.
