Hello fellow researchers. I am looking for ancestor information on my fiance's family who were Romanian Jews and immigrated to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the late 1800s/early 1900s.
Adolph Segal born 1877 arrived in USA 8/23/1902 aboard the ship Philadelphia. He was 25 years old, single. Port of departure: Southampton. Manifest line #0024. He was listed as occupation: tailor. His passage was paid by "intended wife" Sophie Grossman with an address of NY. Many Grossman's came to the US from Romania in 1902 and I am wondering if they are related to Sophie. Their names were Abraham (age 37), Amelia (age 23), Josell (age 1), Leon (17), Samuel (45) and Ysak (39). Some listed ethnicity as Hebjarg. Adolph Segal is listed in the 1910 Ohio Census, age 34, birth: ROU (Romania); wife: Sophie/Sophia age 30 born ROU; son: Sammie, age 6, born New York; daughter: Polly, born New York; Mother-in-law: Fannie Grossman, age 52, born ROU. He probably is the brother of Sam Segal of Squirrel Hill, Pittsburgh, PA. This Sam Segal is listed as b 11/14/1885, Russian Federation; died 6-10-1949, Ross County Ohio. Buried in Grandview Cemetery, Segal Family Plot. If anyone can send me photos of any Segal or Grossman markers, it would be greatly appreciated.
There was a Sophie Grossman listed as residence: Harlan Roumania, but she arrived 1911, AFTER Adolph. Shows her as age 16, ship: Nieuw Amsterdam; port of departure: Rotterdam, Holland; Manifest line #0023; passage paid by Father: ? Grossman of New York. Father's place of birth: Roumania; mother's - cannot make out but looks like W..au or W/L...law. Could be Warchau.
After doing research on the sad experience of the Romanian Jews, I believe that Adolph's parents were likely murdered in the early 1900s after Adolph immigrated to America. I don't know how to identify Adolph's parents as I know many records in Romania have been destroyed. If anyone has experience researching Romanian Jews during this time period, I would like to talk with you.
