John Frederick Metzger was born in Sierra Leone, West Africa, in 1828 (although he might not have listed that as his birthplace later). He was the son of G. W. E. Metzger, a German missionary, and Mary Diana Hickson, who was part African. When his family emigrated to America, he was sent to live in Canada with a Haensel family (I believe Charles Haensel was a minister friend of G.W.E.'s.) while the rest of the family settled in Liverpool, Medina County, Ohio, because there was supposedly not as much racial prejudice in Canada as in the U.S. I don't know how long John Frederick stayed in Canada or whether or not he ever married. The last mention I have of him is in his father's will in 1854, but it doesn't mention where he was living at the time. I assume he looked "Negro" and I know his family members who lived in Medina County suffered a great deal of prejudice because of the parents' mixed marriage. Does anyone know anything about John Frederick?
