*LOTS* of the early settlers in western Ohio came from Frederick & Carrol Co, MD, as well as some from Pa.Many were German ancestry, German Baptist, Brethren, etc.I think it is safe to say that they wrote back to family in Md, etc and reported that the area offered cheap land and good farming.
I don't know anything about Tazewell Co, Ill.
I don't know what "remotely German ancestry" means. It could be that the Gilbert were from Germany, removed to England, and later to America; or that the Gilberts married into German families that settled in southern Pa and western Md.
In 1908, my Isaac's son, George, gave a newspaper interview and stated: "'The Gilbert Family,' said the subject of our sketch, 'come of good old Pennsylvania Dutch stock and settled in Pennsylvania at a very early period in our country's history.Later some of them drifted over into Maryland.
"While in Ohio I lived most of the time in Montgomery and Preble counties, which were principally settled by Marylanders and people from Pennsylvania and Virginia."
