We have been searching for our CURTIS connection. Our ancestral grandmother Mary Jane CURTISwrote that her ancestors originated from Mass then to CT and that her grandfather settled in Charlotte, Chittenden by 1790. We contacted a researcher in the area who found that Zarah CURTIS was on the tax roll at that time and he also had purchased land. This researcher also found records in the Congregational Church there showing the names of CURTIS and YALE family members, names traceable back to CT. We told the researcher that we needed to find a link to a CURTIS family that had pioneered to Knox Co Ohio. We were told that for the window of time that we were looking for that Zarah must be our link. We learned that Zarah had married Phalley YALE in CT and that they had a son, Hosmer who wasborn there. We also learned that after living in VT they lived in NY. Hosmer married Eleanor MELICK in 1814. We couldn’t believe our eyes when we found Zarah and Hosmer on the census records in Knox Co OHIO ! We realized that this was not grasping at straws, Zarah and Hosmer CURTIS Families pioneered about 1815 to Knox Co. On the1820 census Hosmer lived in Bloomfield Township which at that time was part of Knox Co. Mary Jane was born on the 4th of July 1825! On the 1830 and 1840 censuses, Hosmer was living in Morris Township. On 15 October 1846 Mary Jane CURTIS wed George W. SMITH of Fredericktown, Morgan Township, the son of Solomon and Hannah (HAZEN) SMITH. They were married by Jonathan M FARIS at Mt Vernon, Knox Co, Ohio. On the 1850 census, George and Mary Jane (CURTIS) SMITH were living in Bloomfield Township which had been added to neighboring Morrow Co. Hosmer was living at Mt Vernon 5th ward, Knox Co at that time. George and Mary later migrated to IA as did Hosmer! Upon reviewing what others have submitted on the Hosmer CURTIS Family we found very little information on Mary Jane (CURTIS) SMITH. While it is true, that her sister EleanormarriedUzziel STEVENS, it was also reported by some researcher that Mary Jane had married(unknown) STEVENS but Knox Co. records did not prove this out ! After all, George W. SMITH was definitely our ancestral grandfather who married our Mary Jane CURTIS, with proof from the Mt. Vernon, Knox County, Ohio Court House! We are seeking information on the Hosmer CURTIS family.
