Lucinda Paxton was born in Paulding County, Ohio, October 15, 1833, and died August 15, 1899, aged 65 years, 10 months and 1 day.
In the year 1850 she moved to Louisa County, Iowa, and the 15th of May, 1853, was married to Thomas Ward at Columbus City, Iowa. Three years later, May 15, 1856, they moved to Decatur City, living in that vicinity until the time of her death.
She was a mother of thirteen children, seven boys and six girls. Seven of the children are still living; six have preceded the mother. For some time she had not enjoyed good health and on the Monday preceding her death, the family felt much uneasiness concerning her physical condition. The following, however, she seemed to be much better and her death on Wednesday morning was a great surprise to all.
Her death was very peaceful, having apparently gone to sleep when the heart ceased action, leaving a radiant smile upon her countenance. Thus another old settler has been taken from us, one who has helped to pave the way in the early days for the privileges we now enjoy.
Funeral services were held at the M.E. Church in Decatur City, Thursday and the remains laid to rest in the Decatur City Cemetery. E.C. Newland
