Columbus Shoemaker was my great-grandfather so I can answer your questions. I just happened to see your query so I hope you still need this information: Columbus Shoemaker was a private in Company F of the 29th O.V.V.I. He enlisted in 1864 (as a substitute) and served in Sherman's March to the Sea. Columbus' military records say he was born in 1846; however, every other vital record (including his tombstone) say he was born on July 7, 1848 so I suspect he lied about his age in order to join the army.He was married to Delila Ellen Albin; however, his first wife was Eliza J. Holobaugh who died on August 10, 1892.They had eight children: Clara Belle, Addison (my Grandfather), Sarah Jane and John - the twins, Rutherford - who died at 24, Clinton, Lake Erie, and Grace. Columbus is buried in Mt. Etna Cemetary in Pike Co OH.(I have much more information on Columbus - his ancestors and descendents. Please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org and I will be glad to share it.
