I am searching for information on James Smith, my husband's great-great grandfather. He married Mary in Virginia, had children: Regina(abt 1829), Benjamin (abt 1831), Jane E (abt 1833), and Lucinda F (abt 1834), then moved to Putnam County, Ohio, where they had children: Sarah C. (abt 1839), Mary E. (abt 1841), James F. (May 1843), Arthur L.(abt 1844)-our line, George S. (abt 1847), John M. (abt Feb 1850).
The only clue I might have as to where in Virginia they came from is that in the 1860 census they have a Margaret Hines, age 93, born in Virginia, living with them. There is a Margaret Hine in the 1830 Virginia Census in Hampshire County of the right age. There were 18 Smith families in the 1830 Hampshire County census, including a James and a Benjamin, and there is a male between 20 and 30 years of age in the James Smith househould, and one between 60 and 70.
Here is the census information I have:
1840 Ohio Census, Putnam County, Richland Twp. Roll 422 Book 1, Page 332
Males: Age 5 to 10 - 1,Age 30 to 40 - 1
Females: 2 under 5 years old, Age 5 to 10 - 1, Age 20 to 30 - 1
In this census James was 33, Mary was 30, Benjamin was 9, Jane E. 7, Lucinda 5, and Sarah 1.

Judging from the birthplaces and dates of the children, the Smith family moved from Virginia to Ohio between 1834 and 1839. However, there is no James Smith on the Tax List for Putnam County in 1835.

Regina is most likely James' and Mary's oldest daughter, as she is two years older than Benjamin, and her maiden name is Smith on her marriage certificate to neighbor Archimedes Hayden in 1849.

Cornelius, Charles, Paschal, and Mary are the children of James and Mary's oldest son, Benjamin. They are listed with their father in the 1870 Ohio census in Allen County, Monroe Twp. In 1880 Benjamin and his new wife, Rebecca, and stepdaughter, Lulu Maud live next door to his parents and his children. Chesley O is the son of James and Mary's third son, Arthur and his late wife, Ann ?.
Anyone have any information on our James and his family?
