I am researching Jeremiah Elder born abt 1845 in Richland Ohio. The LDS site has an Ancestral File that shows his Father to be George Elder, b. 1812 in Huntingdon, PA.died ca1859 in Richland, OH, married to a Mary ? born 1816 in MD.George's father is shown as John Elder, b. ca 1795 in Huntingdon, d. 12/1833 in Richland, OH, also married to a Mary ? b. abt 1799 in PA.John and Mary's first child is shown as being born in 1803, so the birth dates or identity of the parents must be incorrect. This same information appears to have been picked up and put on a Family Tree on Ancestry.com, except John and Mary's dates of birth are backed up ten years each to 1785 and 1789.
In the 1790 Huntingdon census, I find Abraham, David and Ludewick Elder. In the 1800 census there is Abraham and David. In the 1810 census there is D. (avid?) and William. In the 1820 census there is David, John and William.
This John in the 1820 census is 26 to 45 years old and lives next to William who is over 45.It would seem more likely that John could be the son of William. This John is also the correct age to be the LDS site John, be it 1795 or 1785.However, the demographics of John's children do not come close to matching LDS's John, unless there was a very high mortality rate among the children. For example, LDS John would have 9 children under the age of 10 while census John only has 4.
By 1830, there are too many John's in Huntingdon for me to draw any conclusions from the census data.
In 1830 Richland County, OH, there is a John (and only one John) 50-60 years old, too old to be the LDS John. The children's demographics for this John could fit with the LDS John if the older children either died, married or were otherwise out of the household. Here, for example, LDS John would have 7 children 15 - 20 while the census John has 1 in the household of that age. Richland Ohio has no other Elder's in the 1830 census.
As far as George, there is a George in 1830 in Huntingdon County, Warriors Mark between 20 and 30 with no other members in the household. This could be my George.
By 1840, there George in Richland County, OH 20<30 years old with two females under 5 and one 20<20.He lives next to John Elder 20<30 years old and Samuel 20<30 years old.(Neither Robert or Samuel show up as children of LDS John) and there is also a Robert Elder 30<40 in the county.I believe that this George is my guy.I have not been able to locate him in the 1850 census. His widow and the children are found in the 1860 census in Morrow County, OH and pretty much match up with the family of LDS George.
My conclusion from all of this is that the information from LDS George is probably fairly accurate and he is probably has brothers John and Samuel. He might he the son of the 1830 OH census John, but this John shows only one male between 15 and 20, and that could be the Robert in the 1840 census. However, this Robert has three females between 10 and 15 in the household, so he is probably closer to 40 than 30.
I do not think this John in Ohio is the same as the one on the LDS site.I do not have ready access to original records and cannot say if this John came from Huntingdon or not.
Any additional information or other thoughts to help sort this outwould be appreciated.
