John R. Smith, age 79, of North Canton, died unexpectedly in his home on Monday. He was a glider pilot during World War II, and a graduate of Muskingum College, University of West Virginia, and Kent State University. A former football coach at Glenwood High School, John retired from R.G. Drage Vocational Center. Following his retirement, he was the manager of the Canton office of Ohio Bureau of Employment Services. An elder of Zion United Church of Christ, he was past president of Consistory and a Sunday School teacher. Member of 93rd Troop Carrier Squadron. Survived by his wife, Othella of the home, with whom he celebrated their 56th anniversary June 16, 1999; daughter and son-in-law, G. Lynn and Doug Smith of Bonita Springs, FL; sons and daughter-in-law, John M. and Cheryl of Grapevine, TX, James P. of Park Hall, MD, J. Tim of Leonia, NJ, and J. Daniel and Rose of Englewood, CO; ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday in Zion United Church of Christ with Rev. Eli Klingensmith officiating.
