WINFIELD SCOTT GARDNER, son of WM. A. and ELLEN M. GARDNER, was born in Mapletown, Stark County, Ohio, May l2, l857, and passed to the Great Beyond on July 29, l923, being 66 years, 2 months and l7 days old.His parents and one sister, MYRA ALPHASINE preceding him to the other side.
He leaves to mourn his departure, one sister and three brothers; MRS. W.F. GHORMLEY, of Des Moines, Iowa; JOHN S. and W.M., of Leon, Iowa; and J.R., of Paonia, Colo.
He came with his parents to Decatur County, Iowa, in l859 where they engaged in farming and he has resided in and near Leon, Iowa, with the exception of intervals spent in Wyoming and Colorado.At the time of his death, he was with his daughters, MRS. Z.F. AUSMAN and MRS. LEE J. LITTLE at Paonia, Colorado.
He was united in marriage to IDA BARBARA AKES on Oct. 4, l883, to this happy union were born three daughters; BESS L., HALLIE M., and EVE O.HALLIE dying at the age of two.His wife dying Aug. 25, l902.While BESS and EVE are left to mourn the loss ofa loving father, and four grandchildren sadly miss an indulgent grandfather.
In early youth he united with the Christian Church and was baptized by his father, at that time Pastor of East Eden Church, to which faith he was always true.His life was clean, unselfish, generous, forgiving.No needy person was ever turned away unaided by him.His last illness was cancer of the stomach.
After a brief service at the home, the body was taken to the old home and laid to rest in the Palestine Cemetery by the side of his wife and baby daughter.Services being in charge of the Odd Fellow and Rebekah Lodge, of which he was a truly consistent member.
