Your response raises some questions that hopefully you can answer without the need for additional research.You indicate that Simon died in 1829 according to the cemetery books but they give nothing else.Is there any indication why they make this statement, such as information from probate records or other sources?
The web copy of "History of Union County" does not mention his being from NY.The 1820 census and Adina Dyer indicate that he came from NY.Did you find another source for this information?
As part of our recent trip, we visited Clark County and checked the cemeteries in the area of the land that Simon had applied for a patent on in Clark.We did not find any stones for Gates or other family names that we know to have been associated with his group.Unfortunately, the only day that we could be there, the Clark History Museum was not open so we could not check their records.
Information on Simon Gates seems to only come in small "clues" thus we find ourselves trying to tie all the snippets together.Again, thank you for your assistance.
