The Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic (LGAR) is the oldest women's hereditary society of the United States (even older than the D.A.R. is for the American Revolution). It was formed in 1881 as an auxiliary to the Grand Army of the Republic, the largest Union veterans' organization after the Civil War.The LGAR is now an independent organization and is Congressionally chartered.
Membership is open to women age 10 or older who have either (A) a direct, blood-related ancestor who fought solely and honorably for the Union or (B) a direct, blood- related ancestor whose BROTHER fought for the Union (i.e. uncle).
Local chapters are called "circles."The LGAR is wishing to organize a circle in Vinton County, Ohio.Since there is no women's hereditary society in the county, there should be a good supply of potential members. It takes 10 members to do so.Application blanks are provided free. The cost of membership is a $10 application fee plus annual dues in the $15-$19 range per year.
If you are interested in membership, send your snail-mail address for an application.
