I am a GGGrandson of R.M. STIMSON, the owner, publisher and editor of the Old Marietta Registar Newspaper and his wife Julia SHEPPARD.Several years ago when my Mother passed away we found in the back of her closet a box containing several hundred letters and documents some almost 200 years old mostly from and concerning Julia's Mother (Elisabeth SHEPPARD) and Grandfather(Thomas GILLET).Last year in talking to a cousin I found out that she had two large files of letters and documents from the mid to late 1800's relating mostly to R.M.STIMSON.My cousin has sent me these files and I am tryingto organize and make sense of them.Finding these kinds of documents is every Genealogist's dream.Through them I have found and met a 7th cousin living in England who has written a book of the history of the GILLET family (he has had to rewrite a large portion of this book because of information in the letters).
Here is what I am looking for help with.Yesterday, while randomly Googling various ancestors I came across a reference to a 4 year old E-Bay sale where someone was selling between 850 and 1000 letters by or to R.M. Stimson and his wife Julia and even their daughter.I am posting to all the genealogy message boards that I can a requestfor help to locate who was selling these letters and who if anyone bought them.If you have any information please let me know.
Also last year there was an E-bay auction of two cancelled checks that were signed by R.M.STIMSON that were related to his newspaper business.I attempted to purchase them but was outbid continually and finally lost the auction to an anonymous person whose history showed that they were buying items related to the history of Marietta. If anyone knows anything about this person I would appreciate it if they could put them in touch with me
I know this is a very long shot...but I have to start somewhere.
