Found in History of Wayne County, Ohio 1998 page 262:Melchoir Plank and his wife were the first family of Planks that came to America AD 1744.They were natives of Germany, being persecuted for their religious belief.They moved to Holland. They were seeing friends off on a ship, the captain said that they could stay on the ship overnight, since the ship wasn't sailing till the morning.The next morning they found that the ship had sailed during the night.When they arrived in America the captain sold them to a Mr Morgan of Berks Co PA to pay their passage. He was a harsh taskmaster and sympathetic friends bought them from Mr Morgan. They had six children: Jacob, Christian, John, Barbara, Margaret, Peter.Peter was a minister in the Amish church of Lancaster Co PA.Jacob, Christian, and John married sisters with the last name of Yoder.Jacob was married in Lancaster Co PA where he had 3 children. Jacob moved to Mifflin Co where he raised a family of 11 children: John, Christian, Jacob, Barbara, David, Mary, Jeptha, Abraham, Sarah, Salome and Rebecca. In the spring of 1821 they moved to Wayen County Ohio.They built mills and shops. About 1846, the Planks began to scatter to various parts of the west led by Jeptha and his 2 brother-in-laws.
