Hello! Was researching this branch the morning of 9/11/2001 but got distracted. Just returned from the Williams County seat of Bryan, Ohio, where James L. Butler's death certificate didn't list his middle name or his city of birth or his parents' name, & merely said that he died 4/1/1892 age 79 years, 11 months, and 18 days; which confirms a birthdate of 4/13/1812, which we already knew. I could find no obituary (no copies of that year's newspapers) or cemetary reference for him. Our only hope is that one of his 16 children kept a record. I think I found his widow Catharina Brinkman in the Williams County 1900 census living alone, but no date/place of death or clues to her parentage. Only decent find was that he first bought land in Williams County, and lists himself as already a Williams County resident ("of Williams County")on 9/7/1855; 40 acres. I found four land transactions that provide zero personal information, and ran out of time. When I went to Seneca County, OH in 2001 I didn't find any good information in their local archives, but I didn't know how easy it was to search records of deeds & find out when he first bought & last sold land in Seneca County. Sometimes the deeds make reference to where a person is originally from; I'll go back looking for "land bought by John L. Butler of such-and-such County, Maryland" hopefully.
